Greetings, Teachers! The golden trees and clear blue sky outside my window have brightened my mood today and I hope you have had some time to appreciate our fall days as well. I’m excited to send news today of our joint workshop with the Federated Music Teachers – happening this Friday! Kevin Olson will present “Teaching and Retaining the Post-Millennial Student.” As I move up in years, generational differences are becoming more and more clear to me. I’m really looking forward to gaining some insight into the motivations and challenges of my young students, and maybe their parents as well. Make sure to sign on by 10:45 for a quick meeting with announcements and introductions of new members. The Zoom link will be emailed to members on 11/11. Looking ahead, we’ll have a round table workshop in January. This will be held online. Our goal is to meet at alternate times occasionally so that more members can participate. The meeting time and topic have not been set, and your feedback would be valuable! Send me an email including whether you prefer to meet on Saturday am or pm, or Sunday, Jan. 16 or 17. Also send topics or questions you would like to discuss with our local network of teachers. Due to Safety considerations surrounding Covid-19, the KCMTA Holiday Program at Union Station will not take place this year. I invite studios to find other ways to share holiday music with the community. Consider creating a holiday video in your studio to share with family and friends. Stay safe and healthy! -Melissa Falkner, NCTM Junior Concerto Competition This event provides a performance opportunity for students of piano, strings, and instrumentalists learning concerto repertoire. Though this is a competition, the emphasis is on the educational value of exploring the rich concerto repertoire for each medium. Open to all grades and through age 18, the benefits of learning and performing concerti for students and teachers alike is immeasurable. One movement (memorized) from standard concerto repertoire will be accepted. Winners from each of the 3 age categories will be chosen. This event will be held using an online formats YouTube or Vimeo. There are two important dates to remember: Registration deadline January 15, 2021 & Recording submission by January 30th. For more information, go to: http://kansascitymusicteachers.org/juniorconcertocompetition/recital/. – Dr. Maya Tuylieva Music Progressions I would like to encourage every teacher in Kansas City to enroll their students in Music Progressions. This non-competitive program consists of ten levels. Each level requires proficiency in performance, knowledge of music terminology, rhythm and pulse development, sight-playing, scales, written theory, and ear-training. Students receive a certificate of participation, a ribbon, written adjudicator’s critique, and results from music listening and theory tests. Most students will require at least a semester of preparation. This program is a wonderful alternative to similar (but much more expensive) programs such as RCM or ABRSM.
