Hello Teachers, As we begin a new year, your calendar may not look as full as usual. I hope you will decide to fill it up with some of our upcoming activities! Our January meeting and roundtable discussion will take place this Saturday at 3:00, over Zoom. After a brief general meeting, please join in on our conversation sharing Online Teaching Tips & Tricks. We’ve all had some experience with the ups and downs of virtual teaching, so let’s learn from each other. I’m looking forward to hearing ideas that will help my online lessons be more engaging and effective! The Zoom link will be forwarded to members by email prior to the meeting. Now that 2020 is behind us we are all hoping that our activities will begin to look more normal. Plans for our spring events are underway, but some details are still being decided. Please stay connected by checking our website and Facebook page for the latest developments. I will walk you through the process of planning your topic and theme, generating enthusiasm with your students, and how to break down your daily schedule. I will share what does and doesn’t work, as well as some of the themes and camps that I have provided in the past. BIO Lisa McCluer teaches piano from her home in Overland Park, Kansas. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Music – Piano degree from the University of Kansas and has a strong background in Music Education through Bethany College and KU. She has over 25 years of experience teaching piano and considers it part of her job to continuously learn as a teacher, growing and changing with the times. She has served in a variety of positions with the Kansas City Music Teachers Association, including President, Achievement Auditions VP, Multi-Piano VP, Recording Secretary and Corresponding Secretary. Lisa also enjoys adjudicating at piano events. Lisa has a passion for teaching piano and wants her students to succeed and develop a lifelong love of music. She strives to inspire creativity and musical passion in each student, and to help each reach their full potential. She enjoys creating practice themes and incentives, piano camps, and games to keep students motivated and inspired. She believes in a holistic approach to piano including a variety of styles of music, lead sheets and composition to empower students to pursue their individual musical interests. Lisa feels it is important to establish a relationship with each student, and to appreciate each student’s unique personality, learning style, and gifts. She is constantly gaining fresh ideas and creative approaches to keep student’s interest and to make lessons fun and rewarding. We are looking forward to your submissions! Maya Tuylieva Founder and Executive Director Music Academy of Kansas City IMTF Chair, KMTA Board (913) 735-9507 [email protected] Music Progressions I would like to encourage every teacher in Kansas City to enroll their students in Music Progressions. This non-competitive program consists of ten levels. Each level requires proficiency in performance, knowledge of music terminology, rhythm and pulse development, sight-playing, scales, written theory, and ear-training. Students receive a certificate of participation, a ribbon, written adjudicator’s critique, and results from music listening and theory tests. Most students will require at least a semester of preparation. This program is a wonderful alternative to similar (but much more expensive) programs such as RCM or ABRSM. For more information, go to http://kansascitymusicteachers.org/musicprogressions/ Best, -Aurelian B. Boccard, D.M.A Achievement Auditions Achievement Auditions is set to take place on May 15, 2021. It will take place in-person at a location TBA later with safety measures fully enforced (temperature check, masks required, hand washing/sanitizing before and after playing, etc.). The Honors Recital that usually takes place the day after the auditions may or may not be held if enrollment is low and/or a location cannot be secured. This event is fully prepared to be pivoted to online means (via recordings) if conditions surrounding Covid-19 do not improve by Spring. It will be decided a month before the registration opens whether this event will take place entirely in-person or entirely virtually through video recordings—participants will not have the option of choosing one way or another. Please read this event’s General Guidelines, Syllabus, and Technical Requirements carefully as laid out on KCMTA’s Achievement Auditions webpage: http://kansascitymusicteachers.org/student-programs/achievement-auditions/ to determine if this is the right event for your student. The appropriate level the student should enter in is at the discretion of the teacher with the consideration of the student’s capabilities. Registration WILL NOT open until April 3rd. –Linda Chen, D.M.A. Greetings, Teachers! The golden trees and clear blue sky outside my window have brightened my mood today and I hope you have had some time to appreciate our fall days as well. I’m excited to send news today of our joint workshop with the Federated Music Teachers – happening this Friday! Kevin Olson will present “Teaching and Retaining the Post-Millennial Student.” As I move up in years, generational differences are becoming more and more clear to me. I’m really looking forward to gaining some insight into the motivations and challenges of my young students, and maybe their parents as well. Make sure to sign on by 10:45 for a quick meeting with announcements and introductions of new members. The Zoom link will be emailed to members on 11/11. Looking ahead, we’ll have a round table workshop in January. This will be held online. Our goal is to meet at alternate times occasionally so that more members can participate. The meeting time and topic have not been set, and your feedback would be valuable! Send me an email including whether you prefer to meet on Saturday am or pm, or Sunday, Jan. 16 or 17. Also send topics or questions you would like to discuss with our local network of teachers. Before I sign off, please join me in thanking Mickey Gehring for putting this newsletter together and all our board members for making things work during this strange year. I hope to see you all at our workshop this week! Due to Safety considerations surrounding Covid-19, the KCMTA Holiday Program at Union Station will not take place this year. I invite studios to find other ways to share holiday music with the community. Consider creating a holiday video in your studio to share with family and friends. Stay safe and healthy! -Melissa Falkner, NCTM Junior Concerto Competition This event provides a performance opportunity for students of piano, strings, and instrumentalists learning concerto repertoire.
